It’s the month of Halloween; one of my favourite days on the calendar, and to mark the occasion, I decided to do a creepy photo shoot.

Sarah, the model I chose, had never done a professional photo shoot before (can you believe it??), but I had a feeling she would nail the forest witch/fairytale look I had in mind.

As always, I did some research and prep before the day, looking at references, buying a few props and watching a few make-up tutorials.

I did Sarah’s makeup before we began – red and black eyes, and dark purple lips. I think it turned out pretty well for a dramatic, witchy look – what do you think?

Doing Sarah's Halloween make-up

Sarah is a stage lighting designer and technician by day, and was impressively relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera. I think it helps that my partner/assistant Rowan and I try to create a really light, friendly and fun atmosphere on our shoots.

The clothing was a combination of dresses she had lying around, one of Rowan’s hoodies, and a few pieces borrowed from Sarah’s sister, who luckily has a love for goth culture.

We transitioned from dark witch to forest princess, opting for a red formal dress to stand out against the greens and browns of the woods.

I spent more time than usual on the post-production of these photos, which felt like they would benefit from a slightly unnatural, surreal and poster-like look. The results are one of my personal highlights of my portfolio so far. I hope you like them!

Don't eat the berries, Sarah!
