I recently photographed and documented my cousin Westley and his partner Nikita’s wedding in New Hanover at a beautiful venue called Torwoodlea Lodge.

When the couple asked me to be their official wedding photographer a few months ago, I was nervous – not just because wedding photography is a big deal, but also because I’d already agreed to be one of Nikita’s bridesmaids! I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull both jobs off, but I said yes anyway!

The afternoon before the wedding, my partner/assistant Rowan and I went to the venue to get a sense of the locations and potential shots. A whole afternoon wasn’t enough to explore all the beautiful backdrops and photo opportunities at Torwoodlea, from the idyllic dam, to the forests, old wooden doors and fairy-tale like trees.

Then the big day arrived! My main objective was to try and capture all the special moments that make up a wedding, from the big things, like the exchanging of the vows, to the little things, like the tiny décor details. And, of course, hair and makeup…

Thanks to Sandy Daughterty and her daughter for the beautiful hair styling and Darienne Neville aka Pretty Please-SA for the gorgeous makeup.

The biggest challenge of the day was to balance my roles as photographer and bridesmaid – running back and forth from the camera to the bridal party. Rowan would take over photo duties when I was needed, though he too had to multi-task, as he was also the wedding singer! Needless to say, the ceremony was an epic ballet-meets-relay race between Rowan and I.
